Blues supporters have gone to a dark place. We are a broken, jaded,
miserable pack of footy fans and have a finely tuned love/hate
relationship with the greatest sporting event in Australia. There is
nothing that can change that, no amount of social media fury, no
argument about the team selected and no amount of alcohol. Only a
miraculous series victory. Do we believe in miracles?
Maroons coach Mal Meninga says a lot of things and they are mostly
boring, so we’ll ignore quoting him for the minute. Good news is that
all the talking will stop at 8pm on Wednesday night for the 100th
meeting between the most hated rivals in the land. What a magnificent
history and a great celebration of the jewel in the crown of our code.
Here’s to many, many more – or until I have a myocardial infarction.
Blues coach Laurie Daley has essentially said that he picks his New
South Wales team based on NRL form. There seems to be an inherent
mistake in this philosophy. No footballer performs well in first grade
without their teammates, without training with them for an entire
off-season. Queensland enters this series with a team selected on
character, raw skill and history – not by how many tries they scored on
the Friday night before the team was selected.
History: Played 99; Queensland 53, NSW 44, drawn 2. Since the State of
Origin Series went to the best of three in 1982 there have been 32 Game
Ones played and the spoils are split exactly down the middle with both
sides winning 16 apiece. Despite Queensland skipper Cameron Smith
suggesting the Maroons have been slow out of the blocks in recent years,
the Maroons have won the opening game of the Series in five of the past
seven years. The last time the Blues won Game One at Suncorp was in
2003 when Andrew Johns and Anthony Minichiello steered them to a 25-12
win, then wrapping up the Series in Game Two in Sydney.

The 2014 State of Origin series will be the 32nd time the annual
best-of-three series between the Queensland and New South Wales rugby
league teams have played entirely under ‘state of origin’ rules (1980
and 1981 were only 1 game series). It will be the second series to be
administered by the Australian Rugby League Commission which was created
in a major restructure of the sport’s administration in Australia.
Originally, New South Wales were to host two home matches this year,
however the ARLC Commission announced in November 2012 a new five-year
cycle which would see Queensland instead host two home matches this
year, as well as in 2017, the Blues to host two home matches in 2016 and
the remaining match in 2015 to be hosted at a neutral venue.
Former Canberra, Queensland and Australian captain Mal Meninga will
continue on as coach of the Queensland side, which will seek to win the
State of Origin series for a ninth consecutive time, having won the past
eight editions dating back to 2006. New South Wales will be coached by
former Canberra, NSW and Australia captain Laurie Daley for a second
consecutive year.
Since 1980 it is started and every year best of three series held on
between Marrons and Blues.Since 2003 to 2005 has been champion New South
Wales and since 2006 to 2013 has been champion Maroons.Last year
